Study links three common migraine triggers to worse pain

Heat waves are arriving early this year, with parts of the United States already breaking records. For the 12% of Americans who live with migraines, rising temperatures may worsen symptoms beyond typical discomfort.

A recent study in Neurology highlights three weather-related factors that could heighten the risk of migraine attacks. The findings gain importance as climate change intensifies heat and pollution.

Study findings

A team followed 7,032 people in Israel over ten years, examining daily air pollution levels, weather conditions, and medical visits for migraines. About one-third of participants sought care for a migraine at least once during the study, and nearly half used triptan medications, a standard treatment.

The results pointed to three main triggers: air pollution, temperature—including UV exposure—and humidity. Short-term exposure to high nitrogen dioxide levels, a pollutant from traffic exhaust, was associated with a 41% increase in migraine-related medical visits. High UV exposure raised the risk by 23%, while extreme heat and low humidity appeared to worsen pollution’s effects.

The patterns were consistent. Days with lower pollution saw fewer migraine-related visits, while spikes in pollutants aligned with more cases.

Possible explanations

Physicians note the results match what they see in patients. Air pollution may trigger neuroinflammation, a known migraine risk, by releasing pain-related chemicals like CGRP. For those with allergies, pollutants could also provoke an immune response that leads to headaches.

Heat adds another challenge. Higher temperatures can irritate nerves and blood vessels, and dehydration—common in hot weather—may intensify symptoms. Humidity complicates matters further; sweating without proper hydration can constrict blood vessels, potentially causing pain.

Other triggers include stress, hormonal changes, bright lights, and certain foods, such as aged cheese or processed meats. Unlike these, weather-related factors are difficult to avoid, especially as climate change makes extreme conditions more common.

Previous research has shown that temperature swings and barometric pressure changes can affect migraines. This study’s ten-year span provides a clearer view of how pollution and heat interact. It also indicates that small environmental shifts may have significant effects on those prone to attacks.

Reducing the risk

While pollution and heat cannot be eliminated, doctors suggest practical steps. Monitoring local air quality and staying indoors during high pollution periods can help. Wearing an N95 mask outdoors and using air purifiers at home may also lower exposure.

For heat and humidity, staying hydrated is essential—electrolytes are as important as water. Keeping a headache diary to track personal triggers can make a difference, even when some factors remain unavoidable.
