Alex Morrow, a certified run coach and founder of Resolute Running, considers lactate threshold training essential for long-distance runners. While VO₂ max workouts and short repeats have their place, he says this type of training is the strongest predictor of race performance.

When runners exceed their lactate threshold, their bodies struggle to clear the byproduct of intense exercise, leading to that heavy-legged feeling. Training at or near this pace teaches the body to process lactate more efficiently, delaying fatigue.

The training effect extends beyond speed. Runners who maintain their true threshold pace—rather than pushing harder—develop better pacing discipline, a skill that proves valuable on race day.

The 10-week program Morrow designed gradually increases time spent at threshold pace. It begins with cruise intervals—shorter repeats at threshold—and progresses to continuous runs, peaking at 40 minutes of sustained effort.

Weekend long runs alternate between easy, conversational paces and efforts that include threshold miles. These sessions teach runners to maintain speed on tired legs. The plan also includes rest days, optional easy runs, cross-training, and strength work twice a week.

Threshold pace usually falls between 10K and half-marathon speed, though it varies by fitness level. The effort should feel challenging but controlled—hard enough to push limits without causing exhaustion. Overdoing it risks injury or burnout.

The plan suits runners with an intermediate-to-advanced base who are familiar with structured training, including speed work and long runs. Beginners may need to build endurance first.

Before starting, runners must determine their lactate threshold pace. Lab testing—where blood lactate levels are measured during exercise—is the most accurate method, but it’s not widely accessible. Morrow recommends field tests or using recent race times to estimate pace.

For runners aiming for personal bests, the benefits are clear: faster paces with less strain and the ability to push harder when needed. Morrow emphasizes consistency in workouts and paying attention to the body’s signals. Extra miles sometimes backfire, so balance is key.
