
Twenty-five years after its launch, Lonza Capsugel’s UC-II undenatured type II collagen continues to attract new customers, particularly younger, active adults seeking to maintain joint health.
The ingredient, originally targeted at older adults with joint stiffness, now appears in supplements for runners, gym-goers, and those aiming to extend their healthy years. A daily 40 mg dose, supported by clinical trials, improves flexibility and comfort in healthy adults aged 20 to 55.
From seniors to weekend warriors
When UC-II first entered the market in 1999, glucosamine and chondroitin dominated the joint-health space, typically sold in high doses to seniors managing mobility concerns. Today, the audience has broadened. Social media and AI-driven health searches have turned consumers into informed buyers, prioritizing evidence over marketing claims.
“The market has moved toward younger, lifestyle-focused consumers who seek preventive support,” said Hanna Charron, associate director of global product management for UC-II at Lonza Capsugel. “They aren’t waiting for problems—they’re trying to stop them before they start.”
The change mirrors a wider trend: people want to remain active longer. Marathon training, CrossFit, and even desk jobs that strain wrists and knees have made joint health a concern for adults in their 30s and 40s. The focus is no longer just pain relief but also performance and long-term mobility.
UC-II functions differently from traditional joint supplements. Animal studies indicate it stimulates an immune response that aids natural cartilage repair while maintaining a balanced inflammatory response. Recent preclinical work suggests another potential benefit: supporting gut microbiome balance, though human trials are needed to confirm this.

A low dose with big flexibility
The 40 mg daily dose allows UC-II to fit into nearly any product format. While capsules remain common, gummies, stick packs, soft chews, and functional drinks are growing in popularity. The main challenge lies in preserving the collagen’s undenatured structure during production, a technical issue Lonza has addressed across multiple formats.
“The small dose gives brands flexibility,” Charron said. “But the science must remain consistent.”
Research on UC-II is extensive. It is the most studied undenatured type II collagen available, with trials demonstrating benefits for joint flexibility and comfort in active adults. Future studies will explore broader populations—varying ages, weights, and activity levels—to determine who gains the most. Long-term research tracking effects over years could solidify its role in maintaining mobility.
Trust over trends
Despite its success, the market faces a persistent issue: imitators. Some products claim to use undenatured type II collagen without the same clinical support or quality standards. Lonza addresses this by emphasizing transparency, helping brands educate consumers on what distinguishes UC-II.
That commitment to clarity, rather than fleeting trends, may ensure UC-II’s relevance for decades. For now, the advice is straightforward: if you want to stay mobile, start early.
